Teera-Ue Community Raises Alarm Over Crude Oil Contamination

The Paramount Ruler of the Teera-Ue Community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chief Stephen Koko, has raised concerns over an alleged crude oil overflow from Oil Well 14, located in the neighbouring Kpean community, stating that the spill has now spread into the river and shorelines of Teera-Ue.

Chief Koko disclosed this during the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) on Monday. He appealed for immediate intervention from relevant authorities to prevent further environmental damage.

According to him, crude deposits from the leaking wellhead have polluted the community’s waterways, threatening fishing activities and the livelihoods of residents.

He said he was willing to take journalists and environmental advocates to the affected areas to directly assess the level of impact.

The spill, first reported on December 3, 2025, is said to be from Oil Wellhead 14 in the Yorla Oil Field, where a similar incident occurred in August.

The Yorla facility, previously operated by Shell until 1993 before its exit from Ogoniland, is now under the management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

YEAC-Nigeria through its Executive Director, Fyneface Fyneface has urged the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) and NNPCL to urgently investigate the cause of the leak, halt the discharge, and undertake environmental remediation in line with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021.

The organisation warned that continued leakage could worsen pollution in the Ogoni environment, already suffering long-term damage linked to previous oil spills.
