60MW Gas Turbine, A Milestone in Bayelsa’s 29-Year Journey: Governor Diri

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has described the procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine by his administration as a milestone achievement worth celebrating as the state marked its 29th anniversary today October 1, 2025.

In a statewide broadcast to commemorate both Nigeria’s 65th Independence and Bayelsa’s 29th statehood anniversary, Governor Diri said the turbine, when fully installed, would guarantee uninterrupted power supply across the state, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

He noted that the project was part of his administration’s landmark initiatives, which also include the nine-storey state secretariat complex for efficient public service delivery and the ongoing construction of a 25,000-capacity Olympic-standard stadium to boost sports and youth development.

“The recent arrival of the 60-megawatt gas turbines marks a major milestone and brings us closer to reliable, round-the-clock power supply. This development will reduce household expenses, attract investment, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth,” the Governor said.

Senator Diri also highlighted progress in the education sector, noting Bayelsa’s recent strong performance in NECO examinations and the establishment of science, technical, and vocational colleges across all local government areas.

He said facilities in Ayamasa, Ofoni, Swali, Sampou, and Opume were already functional, while others in Brass, Igbeta-Ewoma, and Oporoma were nearing completion.

Governor Diri while congratulating President Bola Tinubu, Nigerians, and Bayelsans on the twin celebrations urged citizens to reflect on the state’s and nation’s history and renew their commitment to unity, hard work, and hope for a better future.

He stated “The road has not always been smooth, but self-determination matters. For nearly three decades, Bayelsans have been making our own decisions, setting our own course, and running our own race. That is a cause for celebration and a responsibility we must discharge with wisdom and humility,”.

Governor Diri stressed that the narrative of Bayelsa as a homogeneous Ijaw state was on the upswing, assuring that there was much for the people to be grateful for and hopeful about.
