Yemi Solade Questions Source of Wealth Behind Actresses’ G-Wagons

Yemi Solade

Veteran Nollywood actor Yemi Solade has sparked heated debate with his recent remarks questioning the financial transparency of some Nigerian actresses, particularly those flaunting G-Wagon SUVs, a luxury vehicle with a price tag that often exceeds ₦100 million.

In a candid interview, Solade argued that the Nigerian film industry does not generate enough income to justify such extravagant purchases through acting alone.

“No actress can say she bought her G-Wagon from the money made from acting,” he said. “Because how much do they earn?”

Solade, known for his blunt takes and decades-long career in Nollywood, insisted that unless these actresses have additional sources of income, their ability to afford such high-end vehicles is questionable.

He pointed to the economic realities of filmmaking in Nigeria, where actors often work under tight budgets, inconsistent pay, and limited royalties. According to him, even top-tier performers struggle to earn enough from acting alone to afford luxury items without endorsements, side businesses, or other ventures.

“Acting is a passion, yes. But it’s not a goldmine,” he added. “We know what the industry pays. So when someone shows up with a G-Wagon, you have to ask, what else is funding that lifestyle?”

His comments have stirred mixed reactions online. While some fans and colleagues applauded his honesty, others accused him of casting aspersions and undermining women’s success in the industry.

Some pointed out that many actresses today are multi-hyphenates, running fashion brands, securing endorsement deals, monetizing social media, and even investing in real estate. Others, however, echoed Solade’s concerns, calling for more transparency and accountability in how wealth is portrayed in Nollywood.

This isn’t the first time Solade has spoken out about the state of the industry. He’s long been a critic of what he calls the “glamour over substance” trend, where visibility and lifestyle often overshadow craft and professionalism.

Whether viewed as a reality check or a controversial jab, Solade’s comments have reignited conversations about money, fame, and authenticity in Nigeria’s entertainment space.
