‎BMW Group and UNICEF Launch KZN’s First Coding and Robotics Hub

‎‎Students at KwaZamokuhle Special School in Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, are embracing the digital age with the introduction of a new Coding and Robotics Hub. This initiative was made possible through the BRIDGE partnership between UNICEF and the BMW Group, in collaboration with the Department of Basic Education (DBE).

‎The BRIDGE partnership is a worldwide initiative aimed at providing young individuals, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, with essential 21st-century skills. In South Africa, this collaboration works alongside the DBE to establish Coding and Robotics Hubs across all provinces, thus offering cutting-edge technology for educational purposes and extracurricular activities.

‎These hubs, situated in renovated classrooms within pilot schools and outfitted with advanced technology, act as centers of excellence, promoting STEAMIE (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship) education for students, teachers, and the broader community.

‎Founded in 1988, KwaZamokuhle Special School serves 220 students with various special needs, including those facing significant intellectual challenges and those on the autism spectrum.

Despite being classified as a lower-quintile rural school, it has gained recognition for its exceptional academic achievements, both in the classroom and in sports.

‎“Every child deserves the chance to succeed in a rapidly evolving world, no matter their background or the obstacles they encounter. By introducing technology and innovation to schools like KwaZamokuhle, we are ensuring that students with special needs are part of South Africa’s digital future,” states Irfan Akhtar, UNICEF South Africa Deputy Representative.

‎The new hub, one of twelve across the nation, embodies the shared vision of UNICEF, BMW, and the DBE, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and resilience, while guaranteeing that all children have the chance to learn, grow, and enhance their skills and knowledge.
