Mothers have been called to commence breastfeeding one hour after birth and remain consistent in the act for two years to enhance the well-being of the newborn.
Speaking to journalists, a nutritionist, Miss Blessing Okpa, stated the benefits of breastfeeding to both mother and child to include immunity boost.
“Breastfeeding also has antibodies that boost the immune system of the body. It reduces respiratory tract diseases, and other illnesses like diarrhea, asthma, and other children’s ailments”, she explained.
Miss Okpa debunked insinuations that breastfeeding is responsible for breast sagging among women and encouraged mothers to maintain the act of breastfeeding despite all challenges.
Reacting to this year’s theme of World Breastfeeding Day, ‘Sustainable Support System,’ Miss Okpa called on both the family and corporate institutions to encourage mothers to achieve the objectives of breastfeeding.

“What we are saying is that people should create places for breastfeeding in schools, churches, and workplaces. The husbands have to support their wives in whatever they need in order to breastfeed properly. They are supposed to be the people to provide the food they eat and help with domestic chores,” she stated.
The nutritionist urged all stakeholders to carry out a campaign on breastfeeding in all nooks and crannies to sensitise the people.
