The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has declared Dr. George Elombi as its next President and Chairman of the Board of Directors, with the appointment taking effect in September 2025. This decision marks a significant transition for the pan-African multilateral trade finance institution.
Dr. Elombi, a Cameroonian national, brings a wealth of experience to the role, having been with Afreximbank since 1996. Over the years, he has risen through the ranks, most recently serving as the Executive Vice President, overseeing Governance, Legal, and Corporate Services. His extensive background provides him with a deep understanding of the bank’s operations and strategic objectives.

Throughout his career at Afreximbank, Dr. Elombi has played a pivotal role in shaping the bank’s structure, legal and institutional frameworks, and expanding its capital base. He has also been at the forefront of crisis response efforts across Africa and the Caribbean.
Dr. Elombi’s appointment ensures continuity in Afreximbank’s mission to promote and finance intra- and extra-African trade. He will succeed Professor Benedict Oramah, who has led the bank since 2015.
