Final Year Student Allegedly Commits Suicide

Tragic Suicide of Final-Year Student at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Sparks Investigation

On June 18, 2025, Precious Arobo, a 28-year-old final-year Higher National Diploma (HND) II student at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) in Ondo State, was found dead in a bush near his residence, having reportedly taken his own life. The discovery of his lifeless body, found hanging, has left the community in shock and mourning.

A source close to the incident revealed that Arobo left a suicide note indicating emotional distress linked to a troubled relationship, though the precise details remain unclear. The note provided a glimpse into the young man’s state of mind before his tragic decision. Described by friends and colleagues as kind and well-loved, Arobo’s death has deeply affected those who knew him.

Following the discovery, Arobo’s grieving parents arranged for his immediate burial, overwhelmed by the loss of their son. “He has been buried, and the parents were heartbroken over his death,” the source disclosed.

The Ondo State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, confirmed the incident, noting that it was reported to the B Division Police Station in Owo at approximately 10:00 p.m. on June 18, 2025. “Upon receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer led a team of detectives to the scene, where the lifeless body of a young man, aged about 27 years, was found with a rope believed to have been used in the commission of suicide around his neck,” Ayanlade stated. The body was removed and taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) morgue for preservation and autopsy.

The police have launched an investigation to determine the true cause of Arobo’s death, with Ayanlade assuring the public that all efforts are being made to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

This incident marks another heartbreaking case of suicide among students in Ondo State. Less than a year ago, Modupe Ayandare, a female student at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), also took her life in an uncompleted building near a church after leaving a suicide note. The recurrence of such tragedies has raised concerns about mental health challenges among young people, prompting calls for increased support and awareness in educational institutions and communities.
