The Influence of Artificial Intelligence on Society

Artificial intelligence, popularly called AI, originated from a workshop held at Dartmouth College in 1956. It has several interpretations; some regard it as technology designed to enable computers and machines to operate intelligently, while others view it as a replacement for human labor, offering quicker and more efficient results.

Despite these varying perspectives, a shared understanding of AI encompasses its role in assisting humans with problem-solving and streamlining work processes. With the swift advancement of cybernetic technologies in recent years, AI has found its way into nearly every aspect of life. This phenomenon arises from humanity’s constant search for faster, easier, more efficient, and convenient ways to complete tasks.

Consequently, the urgency for continual progress drives people to seek innovative and superior methods of operation. While AI simplifies daily life, Aldous Huxley cautioned in his novel “Brave New World” that as technology evolves, humanity might create a monster or a superhuman entity through genetic advancements. This suggests that as AI progresses, human labor may become unnecessary since various tasks could be performed mechanically in this rapidly advancing digital age.

Currently, many automobile assembly lines are populated with machines and robots, leading to job losses for traditional workers. Additionally, in supermarkets, cashiers may soon be surplus to requirements as digital systems take over human roles. The very masters who brought AI to existence may inadvertently design systems that exhibit racial bias or self-serving tendencies that can harm specific individuals or groups.

However, to thrive in this advancing technological landscape, adapting to and embracing the system is imperative. Despite these concerns, there are several positive aspects to consider. For example, AI is increasingly making inroads into the healthcare sector by helping doctors with diagnoses, identifying disease sources, proposing treatment options, assisting in surgeries, and predicting the potential seriousness of illnesses.

Nevertheless, the involvement of human experts remains crucial to prevent the misdiagnosis of unknown conditions since AI cannot solve every issue humanity faces. At times, AI may encounter limitations, and in moving forward, it might act indiscriminately, inadvertently creating additional problems. Hence, careful oversight of AI functions is essential.

AI should enhance human existence, societal well-being, and the world at large. Any AI that engages in harmful activities towards the biosphere must be prohibited and avoided. Thus, the principles that govern the natural order must be respected. Designers and developers of AI bear significant responsibility for the consequences and influences of AI on society and the world. They must be held accountable for whatever they create and produce.

Given that AI lacks a soul, everyone needs to remember what Joseph Weizenbaum, a pioneer in the field of AI, stated: no one should allow computers to make critical decisions, as AI, being a machine, will never possess human attributes such as compassion and the moral capacity for wisdom and judgment. Therefore, the development of AI technology must proceed with utmost caution.
