I Did Not Promise Rivers United Any Title

With one match remaining, Rivers United coach Finidi George expressed contentment with the team’s performance in the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier League season. Currently second with 61 points, Rivers United are in a tight race with Abia Warriors, who trail by one point, for the second CAF Champions League qualification spot. Remo Stars have secured the championship with an unassailable 10-point lead.

Despite a recent 3-0 defeat to Kwara United, Finidi remains optimistic about achieving the club’s goal of continental qualification. “When I joined Rivers United, my target was to secure a continental ticket, and we’re on track for that,” he said post-match.

He acknowledged Remo Stars’ maiden title win, emphasizing that his focus was on continental qualification rather than the league title. Looking ahead to their final game against Nasarawa United, Finidi is already planning for next season. “We’ll reflect on this season, which hasn’t been bad, and analyze where we fell short compared to Remo Stars,” he noted.

“We’re pleased with our position but aim to return stronger.” Finidi, who previously guided Enyimba to the 2023 NPFL title, took charge of Rivers United at the season’s start after briefly coaching the Super Eagles. Under his leadership, the 2022 champions have recorded 17 wins, 10 draws, and 10 losses in 37 matches.
