UNIPORT Promotes 46 Senior Academics to Professorial Ranks

The University of Port Harcourt has announced the promotion of 46 senior lecturers to the prestigious ranks of professor and associate professor, marking a significant milestone in the academic growth of the institution.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Port Harcourt, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, revealed that 30 academic staff were promoted to the rank of professor, while 16 others attained the position of associate professor (reader).

According to Prof. Georgewill, the promotion process was rigorous and thorough, involving assessments designed to uphold the university’s high academic standards.
“The promotions were approved during the 187th meeting of the Governing Council, chaired by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa,” the VC stated.

A breakdown of the new professors shows a wide spread across various faculties. The Faculty of Science led with seven newly promoted professors, followed by the Faculties of Social Sciences and Management Sciences with five each. The College of Health Sciences also had five promotions, while the Faculty of Humanities had four, the Faculty of Engineering three, and the Faculty of Pharmaceuticals one.

For associate professors, the Faculty of Engineering produced four new readers, the Faculty of Science three, while the Faculties of Education and Humanities had two each. One new associate professor each emerged from the Faculties of Agriculture, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, College of Health Sciences, and the School of Science Laboratory Technology.

This wave of promotions reflects the university’s commitment to academic excellence and its continued investment in strengthening research, teaching, and leadership capacity across faculties.
