Wike Donates N350M, Pledges Land for UNIPORT

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has pledged land in Abuja for the University of Port Harcourt’s (UNIPORT) proposed Centre for Leadership and Political Studies. He also committed N350 million to support the university’s multimedia center.

Wike made the promises during a meeting with UNIPORT’s Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, in Abuja on Monday. Ohuabunwa requested land for the leadership center, modeled after the John F. Kennedy Leadership Center in the U.S., and sought support for a state-of-the-art multimedia facility.

Wike agreed to allocate land but made it clear that FCT funds would not be used for the project. Instead, he pledged N350 million from his personal funds, his wife, and friends to finance the multimedia center.

“Government alone cannot do everything. Those of us who graduated from the university and have been blessed should give back,” Wike said. He urged UNIPORT to seek more support from alumni, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo.

Wike, an alumnus of UNIPORT, has played a key role in its development. As Rivers State governor, he built the Convocation Arena and established the Faculty of Law.

Ohuabunwa praised Wike’s contributions and announced that UNIPORT’s 50th-anniversary celebration would include a N10 billion endowment fund. Wike will be among the distinguished alumni honored.

With Wike’s support, UNIPORT moves closer to its vision of a leadership training center and a world-class multimedia facility.
