From 12noon January 20, 2025, Donald J. Trump would take the oath of office as the 47th president of the United States of America, which has sparked joy in the hearts of some Christians in Rivers State, Nigeria. Trump defeated Kamala Harris who was at the time, the Vice President, in a consequential presidential election on November 5, 2024, despite massive lawfare, media bias, and assassination attempts thrown at him to stop him from contesting the election.
Here in Rivers State, Nigeria, a cross-section of Christians who spoke with our correspondent on the eve of Trump’s inauguration as the 47th president, maintained that his presidency would bring world peace, especially in the chaotic Middle East.
The Christians said, “We need peace across the globe and we see Trump as a man whose temperament can deter aggressive leaders like Putin of Russia from waging wars. “We are happy that Trump was courageous enough to recontest the US presidential election and with God on his side, he won in a landslide and we believe his presidency will quell the ongoing threat to global peace.

“We equally pray God to guide and guard him to successfully complete his tenure as the 47th president of the United States. The world really needs his kind of leadership at this time when the globe is in dire need of peace and stability.” Trump, a real estate tycoon in the US contested the 2016 presidential election on the platform of the Republican Party and won over his Democratic Party opponent, Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president of the United States.
In 2020, he lost to Joe Biden in an election that Trump rejected, accusing the Democratic Party of using the Covid 19 pandemic to rig the election and Biden was eventually sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. After a heated presidential election debate between Trump and Biden in 2024, the Democratic Party forced Biden to withdraw his interest in contesting for a second term due to his poor debate performance.
Shortly before the Democratic Party National Convention, Biden officially announced his withdrawal from the race and nominated Harris to be the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party for the November 5, 2024 election.
Trump defeated Harris to return to the White House for the second time, winning all seven swing states, won the popular votes as his party also won both the House of Congress and the Senate.
