Federal Government Declares Prisons “Red Zones” Ahead of Protest

In preparation for the nationwide protest scheduled to begin on August 1, the Federal Government has announced that all 256 custodial centers across the country are now designated as “red zones.”

These zones are to be strictly respected and protected against any form of violation.

The NCoS emphasized the critical importance of both custodial and non-custodial centers to public safety and national security. “Any attempt to tamper with or attack these facilities could lead to severe disruption of law and order, exacerbating the overall security situation in the country,” the statement warned.

Controller General of Corrections (CGC) Hailey Nababa issued this stern warning in a statement from Abuja on Tuesday.

He said, “In light of the national protest slated for the first day of August 2024, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) informs the public that all Custodial Centers are now designated as red zones.

“Hence, individuals or groups without legitimate business at these centers must stay clear,” the statement, signed by agency spokesman Abubakar Umar, emphasized.

In response to the planned protest, the NCoS has specifically enhanced security measures across all custodial centers. “Adequate security arrangements are in place to ensure that no correctional facility is compromised,” the statement assured. The Ministry of Interior Joint Taskforce (MOIJTF) has been mobilized to provide additional security in and around these facilities.

This announcement follows a similar directive from the Nigeria Customs Services (NCS), which has increased security at the country’s borders. The Comptroller General of Immigration Service, KN Nandap, has instructed Zonal Heads, State Command Comptrollers, and Divisional Immigration Officers to heighten vigilance and surveillance in anticipation of the protest.

Other security agencies, including the Nigerian Army and the police, have also issued warnings against any form of violence during the planned demonstrations. The collective efforts aim to maintain peace and order during this period of potential unrest.
