CAF Champions League: Sports Commissioner charges Rivers United to make history

The Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Barr. Chris Green on Thursday charged the players, coaches and officials of Rivers United to etch their names in the history books as they gear up for their journey in the 2022-23 CAF Champions League.

The ‘Pride of Rivers’ will face Liberian champions, Watanga FC in the first leg of their first round on Sunday at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.

Understanding the weight of the task ahead, Barr. Green visited the reigning Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions during their preparations at their home ground to assure the payment of their bonuses on Friday as he voiced words of support while charging the team to do Rivers State, and the country at large, proud.

“Let me first say, I believe in you all. You all are ambassadors of Rivers State. You are the champions of the land. You have put smiles on the faces of your people,” Barr. Green said.

“We must take it one step at a time and not underrate our opponents because they are also champions in their land.

“Let us strive to work as a unit and as one to make Rivers State and Nigeria proud.

“You have the chance to put your names into the history books by winning the CAF Champions League and be known as not only heroes in your land but known in Africa and the world at large.

“We must cherish and relish this opportunity.

“We have tried in the past but I’m sure you guys have come back with bigger experience. Now I want you to start this journey and have nothing but victory at the back of your minds.”

Barr. Green also reminded the players of the financial support from the club’s number one supporter and Governor of the State, His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike (CON, GSSRS POS Africa) while also confirming that all outstanding bonuses will be cleared on Friday.

“Let me also remind you of the promise of the Governor of our dear State (Rivers), His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike as he has stated that each member of the team will receive $40,000.00 USD if you reach the group stages of the competition.

“All your bonuses will also be paid tomorrow (Friday). So you have all the support in the world both financially and mentally. Hence, go and do us – and yourselves proud.”

Responding, club captain, Festus Austine thanked the Commissioner for his rousing words and promised that the players will justify the confidence reposed on them.

Rivers United will welcome their fellow West African outfit to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday, September 11, 2022 before making the trip to face their opponents for a second leg a week after.
