A medical expert in Rivers State, Dr E. Dominion has knocked Governor Nyesom Wike led state government over the dirty surroundings in the state.

The medical expert made this known to our correspondent as the state joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s World Malaria Day.

The world recognises every April 25 as the day to commemorate global efforts aimed at fighting the scourge of malaria on the planet.

Dr Dominion said “Port Harcourt which is the capital city of the state is where you will obviously find dirty streets and gutters.

“Even the residents of the state are not helping issues as a lot of them don’t clean their environment.

“Mosquito is the carrier of malaria and the kind of environment the state has; gives room for mosquitoes to breed.

“To even prevent stagnant water from living environments is a difficult thing for Rivers people to do.

“Yet, you see them opening their doors and windows all the time in a highly mosquito-infested area.”

The medical expert further urged the state government to do more in keeping the state clean as he also advised the state residents to avoid grown grasses around them.

Reports had shown that over 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.

In 2012, malaria caused an estimated 627,000 deaths, mostly among African children.
