Residents lament fresh crude oil spill in Bayelsa community

A fresh oil spill has reportedly occurred at the Oil Mining Lease 29 operated by Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company in Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

This is coming months after an oil leak occurred at the same oilfield.

It was gathered that the spill occurred from a delivery pipeline around the Ogbolomabiri and Bassambiri communities.

Residents in the area said the damaged pipeline has been discharging crude oil into the environment.

The residents also reported that another oil spill also occurred at a facility in Nembe operated by the Nigerian Agip Oil Company.

According to reports, a fisherman who gave his name as James Karibo had said “It is sad news for us who depend on fishing in the creeks, we have not even recovered from the losses from the last spill which contaminated our waters and destroyed our fishing nets. We are in distress and cannot fish in oil-contaminated waters.”

A community chief, Ibinabo Waribo, from Opu-Nembe, who confirmed the spill said the oil firm had not commenced any response.
