Pirates attack fishermen, kill one in Bayelsa

Armed men suspected to be sea pirates have reportedly attacked some fishermen on Brass Island in the Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

It was learnt that one of the fishermen was killed in the attack on Monday while others escaped with injuries, Punch reports.

It was also gathered that the attackers took away their victims’ engine boats.

Confirming the attack on Tuesday, the spokesman of the state police command, Asinim Butswat, said the identities of the deceased fisherman and other victims had not been ascertained.

“Yes, one person (fisherman) was killed and others sustained injuries. Their identities are not yet confirmed,” Butswat said.

One Nuru Oriade, who claimed to be one of the survivors of the attack, was said to have explained that the assailants operated in six-speed boats.

“We were fishing, dropping our nets this morning when suddenly we saw about five to six-speed boats drew close to us and occupants opened fire,” the eyewitness said.
