The River State Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development says it has extended the deadline for the registration of privately owned boreholes to one year, as part of government’s deliberate effort to ensure quality water consumption in the state.

Commissioner for water resources and rural development, Dr Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja who disclosed this while playing host to the executive members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Port Harcourt, said the extension of the deadline for the registration was necessary to provide more time for private borehole owners to carry out their registration exercise.

Dr Tamunosisi Gogo-Jaja while noting that government under the leadership of Nyesom Wike is committed to providing portable water in line with the international standard for residents of the state, urged members of NAPPS to provide portable drinking water in their various schools, emphasizing that the ministry will send its officials to various schools to monitor the compliance.

“We are glad to say that the level of compliance by privately owned boreholes is very high, therefore the three months may not be feasible”

“We noticed that by the weekend, privately owned boreholes have registered up to thirty-one thousand (31,000), therefore it is quite encouraging, I think that we will allow the registration for privately owned boreholes to run for one year, by the end of June next year so that a lot of people will register”

On his part, the vice-chairman, National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) in Rivers State, Mr Sunday Jaja commended the Rivers State government for digitizing the water sector in the state.

Mr Jaja who also extolled the commitment and doggedness of the commissioner in ensuring that the residents are safe from consuming contaminated water assured the commissioner of the association’s readiness to partner with the government in ensuring quality water consumption for residents in the state.
