Ozoemene: Elite rascality, Nigeria’s biggest challenge in fight against Covid-19

Dr Jekwu Ozoemene

It is emerging that one of the greatest challenges that Nigeria is facing in the current fight against the COVID-19 pandemic is elite rascality and irresponsibility of “returning travellers”. This stems from the Nigerian big man’s “Do you know who I am?” mentality.

That is why NASS members would arrive the country from a COVID-19 hotspot, refuse to undergo NCDC protocol at the airport, and will still not self-isolate at home for 14 days.

That is why the President’s Chief of Staff will arrive the country on March 14th from Germany, a country in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic, refuse to self-isolate for 14 days as recommended, go straight back to work, and convert himself to the President’s Chief of Spreading by infecting his aides, the Aso Rock villa, State Governors and God knows who else.

That is why on the 10th of March, at the height of the pandemic in the UK, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to that country will hold a lavish 80th birthday party to which Nigeria’s who-is-who is invited, some of who have since allegedly contracted the virus while others have arrived back home in Nigeria and are possibly further propagating the virus.

That is why despite the uncertain times and the fluid nature of the pandemic, our glitterati still trooped out on the 14th of March for the Africa Magic Views Choice Awards (AMVCA) and have now been advised to self-Isolate as at least one known attendee has tested positive.

You see this life?

To the Nigerian big man’s “Do you know who I am?”, with a chuckle, the tiny CoronaVirus has responded

“Na who you be sef? Ordinary man like you? You are nothing!”
