Rivers United maintains winning streak in NPFL

Rivers United FC kept the pressure on Plateau United with a hard-fought 1-0 win against FC Ifeanyiubah in the match-23 tie of the Nigeria Professional Football League in Port Harcourt.

Ogbonna Onuoha netted the winning goal seven minutes from time.

Stanley Eguma’s men sit in the second position on the league table with 42 points from 23 games.

 

The Technical Adviser of Rivers United Stanley Eguma said they played below expectation but was happy the team secured the three maximum points.

 

”I think we played below expectation today, there is no doubt about that. But the most important thing is that we won the game. The goal came very late in the game, that was not good enough for us. I think the winner that came very late, before then our boys were a little bit demoralized. We tried to outsmart our opponents but they prepared very well for us. I expected a very tough game today because having won an away game our next opponents must have scouted us very well. So I expected a tough game and IfeanyiUbah gave us a tough game and I am very happy that we won the match”. he said.

Rivers United will next face Enugu Rangers in week 24 of the NPFL.

Plateau United maintained their top position on the NPFL table following a 1-0 away win Wikki Tourists at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium, Bauchi on Sunday.

Sunday Anthony scored the only goal in the 33rd minute of the game.

Plateau United occupy top spot with 43 points from 23 games.

Elsewhere, Kano Pillars forced their hosts Lobi Stars to a 2-2 draw. at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi

MFM and Enugu Rangers battled to a 0-0 draw at the Agege Stadium.

Chinedu Ohanachom bagged a hat-trick as Nasarawa United beat Katsina United 3-0 at the Lafia City Stadium.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars recorded a slim 1-0 win against Abia Warriors with Fuad Elelojuoti scoring the winning goal five minutes after the break.

Dakkada FC also beat Heartland 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo.

At the Sanni Abacha Stadium, Jigawa Golden Stars rallied back from a goal down to beat Kwara United 2-1.
