The state Islamic Leader and Vice President-General, Rivers State Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor has said that all those celebrating every 1st day of January are reverencing a pagan god called Janus.

In a 3-paged copy of Alhaji Uhor’s research piece which he made available to our correspondent also berated Pope Saint Gregory for allegedly ordaining the world-wide calendar in the year 1582 that encourages the celebration of 1st January by Christians and others.

The Islamic leader said: “The Romans dedicated the month of January to Janus because, in Roman religion and mythology, Janus is the god of beginnings.

“We were told that the calendar in world-wide use today was ordained in 1582 by Pope Gregory of all persons.

“Meaning that for the past 438yrs, a sizeable portion of mankind led by the Christendom has been paying undiluted annual homage to an ancient pagan god(Janus).

“How come the honouring and celebrating of an ancient idol was officially instituted by the Pope himself who was supposed to be God’s representative and for the past 16th century, the Christians did not sustain the campaign against it?

“For them to apparently enjoin mankind to embrace and honour this idol raises a serious question about our obedience to God.”
