Rivers, Edo APC crisis – Akande replaces Lawan on peace committee

Former (Interim) National Chairman, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Bisi Akande, will replace Senate President, Ahmed Lawan as head of a reconstituted 12-man reconciliation committee, which will be inaugurated today.

Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki’s loyalists had objected to the committee to mediate in the political crisis resulting from non-inauguration of 14 House of Assembly members-elect loyal to his immediate predecessor and the National Chairman of the APC Adams Oshiomhole.

According to them, the panel consisted of people with vested interests in the crisis, Punch reports.

Members of the Bisi Akande committee are governors Abubakar Bello (Niger) and Gboyega Oyetola (Osun).

Others are Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Ahmed Wase; ex-Nasarawa State governor, Umaru Al-Makura; Senator Kashim Shettima; and the Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor.

The rest are Alhaji Nasiru Koki, Senator Khairat Gwadabe-Abdulrazak, Senator Binta Garba and Senator John Enoh (Secretary).

A statement by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the panel was reconstituted after a review by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the leadership of the APC.

He said, “The committee is empowered to address grievances of party members across the country and resolve existing conflicts, all with a view to fostering oneness, strengthen the party for better governance and ensure unity of purpose within the party.”

The 10-man committee headed by Lawan was set up in November. Akande was Vice-Chairman.
