Port Harcourt Landlord Sets Ludicrous Rules For Tenants

Florence Uwaeme

Good accommodation in this part of the country is not easy to come by especially if you don’t have a lot of money. There are myriad of tales told by different tenants about their landlords/landlady.

During my undergraduate days, I once went house hunting and the Landlord in addition to the exorbitant fees charged, he led out ridiculous rules that even a toddler would struggle to live by. Because the landlord lives in the same compound, he was keen on not seeing his tenants come back later than 7 pm. Funny thing is, the house isn’t even close to school. So let’s say you had a 6 pm lecture (which usually lasts by 7 pm or 7:30 pm) how are you supposed to get to the house without being locked out for the night. Or maybe I should leave a lecture and run back home because I live in a house that the rules are outrageous.

This particular landlord here in Port Harcourt has his house located around a school environment; the university of Port Harcourt precisely. And his laid out rules are nothing but fun. These rules numbers from 1 to 16. All of which must not be broken.

Here Are Some Of The Rules
1. Tenants must pay their rents on time.
2. Tenants must contribute towards the maintenance of the house
3. Tenants must keep their rooms tidy at all times. As the Landlord has the right to inspect the rooms at any time. It will be something like this; your landlord badges into your room and starts to inspect your kitchen and toilet. Lol.
4. Tenants are responsible for keeping their items safe
5. Smoking not allowed in the house. Like, the Landlord will be in every room at the same time checking for offenders.
6. Tenants are responsible for keeping the compound clean. That means; the tenants will have to share days of sweeping amongst themselves. Very funny.
7. No indecent dressing for the boys. These include no sagging of trousers, no earring/piercing of any body part, no plating or perming of hair.
8. No indecent dressing for the girls. No wearing of bum shorts, no wearing of colourful extensions, no wearing of low waist, no wearing of eyelashes, and nails.
9. No marlians. This particular rule was written in capital letters.

What do you think about these rules? Are they tenable? Can students abide by these rules in this time and era?
