Assembly rejects Wike’s nominee

The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, suspended the screening of Sylvanus Nwankwo, one of Governor Nyesom Wike’s nominee from Etche Local government area as a commissioner-designate.

The House suspended Nwankwo’s confirmation after members found out that the nominee failed to provide his tax certificate.

Lawmakers to kick against Nwankwo’s confirmation, after he said his tax was deducted from the source when he served as the Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs during Governor Nyesome Wike’s first tenure.

Speaker of the Assembly, Ikuinyi Owaji-Igbani asked Sylvanus Nwankwo to provide and submit his tax certificate to the Majority Leader, Martin Amaewhule.

“We are a responsible Assembly and our role here beyond Lawmaking is also to ensure that we approve for the Governor, those who are worthy in character and truth to serve in the state Executive Council.

“Having served before in the Governor’s cabinet as Commissioner we have no doubt that your achievements instigated your re-nomination. However, we believe that the right thing must be done.

“Kindly exit the Chamber and ensure that you produce the original copy of your Tax Clearance Certificate and it should be routed through the Leader of this House before we continue with your process,” he said.
