House of Assembly sets up committee to appraise combat of serial killings

The Rivers state House of Assembly has it would set up an Ad-hoc committee to liaise with relevant agencies to appraise the extent to which the serial killings in Port Harcourt is being combated.

This followed a motion jointly sponsored by the lawmakers representing Emohua state constituency, Hon Sam Ogeh; and Okrika state constituency, Hon Linda Stewart at plenary on Thursday.

The motion which condemned the killings also urged the house to summon relevant bodies such as the hotel owners to answer questions on the menace.

The motion read in part “that if nothing is done to check and scrutinize the security architecture of hotels in the state, the ugly trend may likely plunge the state another circle of the new security challenge, thereby undermining the efforts and gains already made by the state government in the fight against insecurity”

Lawmakers including Hon Evans Bipi, Hon Michael Chinda, Hon Anslem Oguguo Hon Okpokiri Nwanaka and Hon Solomon Sokolo during debate on the motion lauded the sponsors of the motion and joined in condemning the killings.

Speaker Ikuinyi Owajii Ibani while ruling on the motion, announced the setting up of a 3-man committee to liaise with relevant agencies including the police and hotel owners and report back to the house to enable the house to appraise the progress made by the agencies in tackling the menace.

When put into a vote, 20 lawmakers present voted in favour of the motion

The Ad-hoc committee members include Hon Kelechi Nworgu as chairman, Hon Solomon Sokolo and Hon Michael Chinda as members
