Rivers police set to dislodge criminals through technology

By Brave Dickson

The Rivers State police command has expressed readiness to dislodge criminals in the state through the use of high power technology the command had procured.

Revealing this to our correspondent, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni said a lot of feats his command had recorded especially in the area of crushing kidnapping and armed robbery activities were as a result of technological deployment.

He said, “our new police investigation is technology-driven. Most of the kidnapping operations we have busted is as a result of technology.

“The state Criminal Investigation Department has been able to procure some equipment in tracking the locations of these kidnappers and where their victims are kept.

“Technology is the right step in the right direction because we are moving ahead of time. So, the deployment of technical intelligence and devices are key to modern policing.”

The state police image maker also called on the people of the state to feel free in giving useful intelligence to the police adding that such assistance would go a long way in securing the land.

The need to embrace ICT in policing Nigeria can not be overemphasised because insecurity such as robbery, kidnapping and insurgency among others have taken a new dimension and have gone sophisticated as criminal elements are now deploying high-tech approach such as mobile technology, internet technology for exploiting and unleashing illegal activities on the society.

The reduction of these continuous and unpleasant modernised crimes underscores the need for the fortification of police operations in Nigeria through the effective use of information communication technologies.

It is, therefore, heart-warming to hear from the Rivers State Police Command that new technological devices have been procured to prevent crime as well as to improve the performance of the police.

Recently, the rate of crime in Nigeria, especially in Rivers State, has increased to the level of generating public uproar against governments to provide an immediate solution.

However, the state government in its bid to curb insecurity has put in place various security measures and policies to protect the lives and property of its citizens but the result is yet to be commendable.

It is also imperative to note that technological innovations bring about change in types of crime and approaches which have made it advisable for security managers and governments to invest highly in modern crime-solving technologies such as social media policing, shots potter detection system, CCTV, DNA testing among others.
