Host Communities petition Rivers Assembly over activities of multinational

The people of Oyorokoto and 28 other host communities in Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, on Tuesday, petitioned the Rivers state House of Assembly over the activities of AMNI International Petroleum Development Company.

AMNI is the operator of OML 52 TUBU Oil and Gass Field.

The company said on its website that it is an independent indigenous oil & gas Exploration & Production (E&P) company with its head office in Lagos, Nigeria.

However, it did not list OML 52 as one of its wells.

The petition against the company was presented at the floor of the House by Hon Christian Ahiakwo, member representing Andoni in the state assembly.

According to the petitioners, AMNI International Petroleum Development Company has been operating in the area with outright negligence to the security of the people, their welfare and employment.

The petitioners said the company has been operating without any form of understanding with the people in terms of MOU hence, their approach to the RSHA for a legislative intervention before the situation degenerates into a full-blown security crisis.

Calls and messages to the Port Harcourt office of the company for comments on the allegations by the communities were not immediately responded to.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani, relying on order 22 of the House Standing Rules, constituted an ad-hoc committee to look into the petition.

Members of the committee are:
1. Hon. Matthew Dike – Chairman
2. Hon. Solomon Wami – member
3. Hon. Smart Adoki – member
4. Hon. Igwe Aforji – member and
5. Hon. Tony Ejiogu – member.

The House was adjourned to Thursday 15th August 2019.
