Immigration begins registration of immigrants in Rivers State

The Nigerian Immigration Service, Rivers State Command, has commenced the electronic registration of all migrants residing in the 23 local government areas of the state.

The Comptroller of the State Command of the NIS, Mr Segun Adegoke, during the flag-off in Port Harcourt on Tuesday said that the exercise will help in improving the security of lives and property in the State.

Adegoke added that a comprehensive knowledge of all migrants in the State will also help in the improvement of security in the country.

According to him, the procedure for the registration is free of charge for regular and irregular migrants in Rivers State.

He said: “The registration will capture the Bio-metric and photographs of all the(Regular and Irregular) migrants in the state.

“It is free of charge and for the period of the amnesty there will be no penalty(of deportation or fees to be paid).

” It is compulsory for visitors staying for more than 90days in the country. It is in compliance with the provisions of section 2 of the Immigration Act, 2015 and Regulations 24-34 of the Immigration Regulations, 2017″.

He warned that any person who provides accommodation to the migrants particularly Landlord and Hoteliers will be held liable for the non-compliance by any migrant.

He added that a special amnesty has been offered to migrants who have overstayed in the country for a period of 6 months.
