FIDA tackle DPO over detainment of abused child in Rivers State

Tina Amanda

International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Rivers has called on the Commissioner of Police Rivers State to call to order, the Divisional Police Officer of Rumuokoro.

FIDA is also asking the CP to force the DPO to release to them a 13 years old house help identified as Favour, whose aunty abused with hot water for urgent medical attention.

Favour was said to have been abused with hot water mixed with pepper by her aunt Oluchi Chima, at No 13 Oronda street, Rumuagholu, Rumuokoro in Obio Akpor local government area.

According to the Former Chairperson of FIDA, Antonia Osademe, the incidence was reported to FIDA by concerned neighbours who posted the little girls condition on social media.

“We got a distress call from concerned neighbours around Rumuagholu where one Mrs Oluchi China poured hot water on a 13 years old house help living with her.

“She, first of all, flogged her, ground pepper poured into the girl’s vagina and poured her hot water

“After inflicting such injury on the child, she still sent the child to fetch water with the wounds on her body.

“Concerned neighbours alerted FIDA, we rescued the child, took her to Rumuokoro police station to incident the matter, but instead of the police to take down statement, they said they will go for the arrest of the woman, we took them there and we didn’t see the woman to arrest, we returned back to the station”

She stressed further that the matter when reported to the DPO of Rumuokoro police station, the DPO didn’t take any legal actions on the matter or agreed to release the girl to them for proper medical attention.

“We later asked the police to release the child to FIDA so she could be taken to the hospital for treatment, the DPO refused and instructed that the child should be detained behind the counter. The child was there from the morning hours till night and Police still refused to give us the child.

“The DPO is trying to compromise this case, we are not surprised, because this is not the first time

“This is the third matter FIDA has handed to the DPO of Rumuokoro similar, Child abuse cases, and he will forcefully take the children from us pretending to handle the matter, but to no avail.

“He will never do anything afterwards, he will hand over the children back to their abusers and they will go away with the children.

“This time we are insisting on this matter and it must be charged to court”
