Court orders Police to pay 100 million naira to the family of a victim killed by police

Ugochukwu Iwuchukwu
A State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered the Police to pay the sum of one hundred million naira as compensation over the death of one OWUNARI DOUGLAS who was killed by some officers of the force.
53 year-old OWUNARI DOUGLAS was killed during an alleged raid by some officers of Nigeria Police on November 23, 2018, at Nembe Waterfront.

The Presiding Judge, Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI while delivering its judgment on the fundamental right suit filed by the bereaved family said the death of OWUNARI DOUGLAS was as a result of negligence by the Police Officers.

The court also ordered the Commissioner of Police to investigate the surveillance team that conducted the said raid on Nembe Waterfront on November 23.

In the meantime, the lawyer to the bereaved family, IGONIKON TARIAH said the judgment is a victory for the rule of law. He said the judgment will enable the police to be mindful of the way they handle their guns while on duty.

The son of the deceased, ISOBOYE DOUGLAS while reacting to the judgment said the court is the last hope of common man. He said that the family is at relief for the judgment but stated that no amount of money can bring their father back to life.

The lawyer to the Police, CELESTINE DICKSON said his clients will appeal the case after reviewing the judgment.

Dickson noted that the police has the sole jurisdiction to protect the lives and properties of citizens in the country.

He assured Nigerians that the Police will not relent in their quest to provide adequate security across the country.

Our correspondent reports that the court also ordered the Police to allow the bereaved family to bury the remains of OWUNARI DOUGLAS who is currently lying at a morgue in Port Harcourt.
