Army detains lawmaker, youth president; declares LGA chairman wanted in Rivers State

Okpokiri Nwanaka Okpokiri, the Member Representing Ahoda-West Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly has been detained by personnel of the Nigerian Army.

This is as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has won extra 3 local government areas in the results collated.

Among those also arrested by the army include the Eleme Youth President, Prince Brain Emere Gokpa who was arrested on Saturday morning.

No reason has been given for their arrests.

However, Rowland Sekibo, the Executive Chairman of Akuku Toru had been declared wanted by the army following the eruption of violence in Abonnema which claimed the lives of over 27 persons including a soldier.

The army in a statement by its spokesman, Sagir Musa, a Colonel, blamed the LGa chair for the assault on troops in the area, an allegation he denied.

The army has laid a siege on the riverine town with the mass arrest of politicians in the area. Locals say about 300 persons have been arrested while thousands have fled the town.

The army spokesman for the 6 division of the Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Aminu Iliyasu, a Colonel, did not respond to our enquiries for comments on the matter.
