World Volunteers Day: Group urges Nigerians to imbibe the culture of volunteerism

A non-governmental organization, the Women Economic and Social Empowerment Initiative, WESEI, has called on Nigerians to imbibe the culture of offering voluntary services to humanity.

The founder of WESEI, Izuma Okoroba, stated this during the launch of a network of volunteers in Port Harcourt named Gofuture in readiness for the World Volunteers Day on December 5th, 2018.

Izuma Okoroba said the aim of Gofuture is to use volunteerism to develop and induce a social change in Nigeria.

“GoFuture Network is a community of Active Citizens who work together using media and action through volunteerism to develop and induce social change.

“The network is non-political, non-religious, accommodates every gender and economic class. The only common factor with all members is the Passion for change.

“GoFuture’s primary focus is the welfare of our communities. In a part of the world where welfare structures for vulnerable groups are broken down or poorly maintained, through the advocacy efforts and actions of GoFuture Volunteers, we believe that inequalities would reduce significantly in the developing world” she said.

Izuma Okoroba also said that GoFuture provides an opportunity for youths to acquire new skills and gain inspiration for personal career goals as they network with other like-minded people of diverse backgrounds.

The Rivers State Commissioner for Social Welfare and Rehabilitation Inime Aguma during the event said rendering free service to humanity is the greatest gift to the society.

Inime Aguma, represented by a Director of Social Welfare in the Ministry, Iminabo Fubara said Nigerians should make volunteerism a part of their lives.

The Senior Pastor of Trinity Worship Centre Port Harcourt, Apostle JD Kosita-Madu during his speech said that many youths lack mentors.

Apostle Kosita-Madu said the art of mentorship is a lost art in Nigeria especially in the Niger Delta region.

He also said that mentorship plays a big role in the lives of the youths who are looking up to someone for direction in life.

On her part, Rev Christie Ogbeifun in her comment during the event said that determination with a purposeful vision will lead to success.

She advised the youths to always put God first in their endeavours stressing that God can never disappoint whoever that believes in him.
