Cholera scare in Port Harcourt as residents decry lack of clean drinking water

Brave Dickson

Residents of Creek Road axis and its environs in Port Harcourt are now suffering from cholera and other water-borne diseases, resulting from the lack of potable drinking water in the area.

According to them, “after former governor Peter Odili’s administration, no successive government has been able to provide us with potable drinking water”.

Chairman, Nembe/Bonny/Belle waterfront, Mr Tobin Alapakabia told our correspondent that the development has made drinking water very expensive in the area.

Mr Alapakabia said, “water sellers in the area popularly called maruwa now sell a 20 litre jerrican for 50 Naira adding that he spends over 10,000 Naira every month on water purchase for domestic use alone.

“Politicians in course of their campaign have promised to give us potable drinking water. After voting them into power, they renege on their promises”.

The chairman said a lot of infant mortalities in the area are traceable to the use of contaminated water, adding that the water they consume is untreated.

He, therefore, called on all relevant agencies, including government at all levels to come to their rescue.

The proliferation of sachet and bottling water firms in Rivers State came as a result of the shortage of potable drinking water.

Unlike before, it is difficult now to find government water taps in the streets of Port Harcourt.
