Rivers State Government to begin arrest of Street traders

The Rivers State has said it will begin the arrest of street traders on Bishop Okoye street and waterlines Axis of Port Harcourt.

The Rivers State Commissioner for special duties, Emeka Onowu, in a chat with Journalists, said officials of the Rivers State Government will arrest anyone caught trading along the specified areas. He declared that the operation will be carried out all through the day and the night.

“No one man or group of persons can be above the law or above a Government of a State.

“The Government of Rivers State has tolerated traders enough, and we’ve begged them and we’ve given them three weeks notice. They begged again and we gave them another one week notice.

“Go to Bishop Okoye. This notice and warning is for Bishop Okoye traders. Leave the road and go into the market and sell.

“Because as from Tuesday, the 24th of April 2018. We are going to raid Bishop Okoye. We will raid you and the moment we catch you, if you’re apprehended, we will charge you to court.

“We are not going to beg again. Every trader, if you know you are selling on the road. Those of you who are collecting money from them to give them space on the center of the road should desist from it.

Emeka Onowu further said the Rivers State Governments is serious, with its zero tolerance for street trading in Rivers State, and that traders must leave the road or be chased away by force.
