Asisat Oshoala Still ‘Very Much Part’ of Super Falcons, Says Coach Madugu Amidst Absence

The prolonged absence of Super Falcons star forward Asisat Oshoala from the National team roster has been officially addressed by interim head coach Justin Madugu, who dispelled rampant speculation of a rift or retirement. Oshoala has not featured for the Super Falcons since the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, missing subsequent international engagements against Algeria, France, and most recently, Cameroon.

Rumours had intensified regarding a potential fallout between the prolific striker and the national team setup, or even an unannounced retirement. However, speaking to Brila.net, Coach Madugu categorically denied these claims.

“Her leadership and experience are not in doubt,” Madugu stated. “We are simply trying to open the door for new players to gain international exposure. Asisat is still very much a part of this team.”

Oshoala, a six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year and one of the most decorated players in African women’s football history, currently plies her trade with Bay FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States. Despite her illustrious career, the former Barcelona Femeni striker has recently experienced a dip in form, reportedly going seven matches without scoring for her club.

This uncharacteristic scoring drought for a player of her calibre has contributed to the ongoing discussions surrounding her national team involvement. The Super Falcons are currently preparing for upcoming fixtures, including a double-header friendly against Cameroon and a training camp in Portugal with two matches against the Portuguese national team, all serving as crucial preparation for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

While Oshoala’s immediate return remains uncertain, Coach Madugu’s clarification aims to quell any lingering doubts about her future commitment to the Super Falcons.
