Favour Ofili Sets World Record

Favour Ofili Breaks Women’s 150m World Record at 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games

Nigerian sprint sensation Favour Ofili engraved her name in history at the 2025 Adidas Atlanta City Games on Saturday, delivering a breathtaking performance at Piedmont Park in Atlanta. The 22-year-old shattered the women’s 150m world record with a sensational time of 15.85 seconds (2.0m/s), becoming the first woman ever to dip under the 16-second barrier. Her remarkable run obliterated the previous record of 16.23 seconds, set by Bahamian Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018, cementing Ofili’s status as a global sprinting superstar.

Ofili’s historic achievement headlined an impressive showing by Nigerian athletes at the high-profile street meet, which drew top international talent to compete in a vibrant, fan-friendly, open-air environment. The Adidas Atlanta City Games, known for its unique street-style format outside traditional stadiums, fosters an electric atmosphere that brings athletes and spectators closer together, amplifying the excitement of world-class athletics.

Among the standout Nigerian performers was Tobi Amusan, the world record holder in the 100m hurdles. Amusan clocked 12.53 seconds to finish second in her heat, trailing American Keni Harrison, who won in 12.44 seconds.

Amusan’s performance secured her a spot in the final later that day and underscored her growing momentum ahead of the summer championships. Having recently posted times of 12.74 seconds in Xiamen and 12.66 seconds in Keqiao, Amusan continues to build her form as a dominant force in her event.

Sprinter Udodi Onwuzurike also shone brightly, producing a season’s best of 10.20 seconds in the men’s 100m. He finished second in his heat behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who took the win in 10.13 seconds. Onwuzurike’s strong showing earned him a place in the final and marked a significant step in his resurgence during the 2025 season, signaling his intent to compete at the highest level.

The Adidas Atlanta City Games’ innovative approach to athletics, held in an accessible urban setting, created a dynamic backdrop for these performances. By blending elite competition with a festive, inclusive atmosphere, the event highlighted the global appeal of track and field while showcasing Nigeria’s rising stars on an international stage.
