Experts Urge Government and Private Sector to Invest in Renewable Energy, Protect Mother Earth on World Earth Day

Environmentalists are calling for a sustainable policy framework on renewable energy to meet the 2030 global target of power generation that will be friendly to Mother Earth.
 
The United Nations General Assembly proclaim 22nd April annually as the International Mother Earth day through a resolution adopted in 2009. This year’s theme, Our Power Our Planet, calls some people worldwide to unite behind renewable energy and promote clean electricity by 2030.


While highlighting the need to shape a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Emphasising the theme, National Publicity Secretary of Waste Management Society of Nigeria, WAMASON, Mr Benson Abu, urged government and the private sector to invest more in renewable energy.

He said “am calling on the government to create an enabling environment for private sector to thrives and the issue of the Mother Earth should not be politicized”. Mr. Abu also called for actions to mitigate the harm done to earth resources by avoiding the importation of absolute waste in the name of non-hazardous waste into the country.

A member of the Institute of Environmental Practitioners of Nigeria, Mr. Ruben Osai while advocating the reasons for cleaner energy for the country noted that, like most developing country Nigeria is expected to adopt precautionary principals in matters concerning waste.

He stated that there’s a thin line between hazardous and non-hazardous waste. Another Environmentalist Mrs Constant Meju found a various harmful practices on Mother Earth with effects on plant and fishes and consequently on women and children.

Today marks the 55th anniversary of Earth day, and this years slogan portrays the point that protecting the planet Earth is everyone’s responsibility, let’s be part of it.
