Beyond the Classroom: NDDC Sparks a STEM Revolution for Niger Delta Girls

In a bold stride toward the future, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is reshaping the narrative for young girls in the region—one science project at a time.

At the vibrant closing ceremony of the Girl Child STEM Competition in Port Harcourt, the NDDC reaffirmed its dedication to bridging the gender divide in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The initiative, described as a “launchpad for tomorrow’s female innovators,” is not just a competition—it’s a movement.

Representing the NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, the Director of Education, Dr. Awele Chukwudifu, underscored the Commission’s belief in education as a pillar of human capital development. She commended the girls for their brilliance and resilience, noting that they’ve been equipped with future-proof skills that will open doors far beyond the classroom.

Also speaking at the event, Professor Continue Eletu, on behalf of the Rivers State Office, framed the initiative as a vital component of the Commission’s long-term agenda to foster inclusion, innovation, and access. He linked the effort to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the competition as “a national investment in the minds of young women who will shape tomorrow’s tech-driven Nigeria.”

The competition drew bright minds from the nine Niger Delta states, spotlighting girls who excelled in engineering concepts, scientific reasoning, and mathematical logic. Speakers noted that these foundational skills are crucial for Nigeria’s socioeconomic advancement and global relevance.

Lead Consultant, Chief Godson Ideozu, praised the dedication of all participants, noting that the program’s next phase would involve mentorship and long-term academic support to sustain the momentum.

The highlight of the day was the crowning of Miss Jegede Osamagbe as the overall winner. With pride and humility, she left a powerful message for her peers: “To every young girl out there, remember—if you can imagine it, you can achieve it.”

Through this initiative, the NDDC is not just investing in education—it’s lighting the way for a generation of girls who will lead, innovate, and transform the Niger Delta and beyond.
