PROFILE: Meet Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Retd.): the Newly Appointed Sole Administrator of Rivers State

In a defining moment for Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, an esteemed former Chief of the Naval Staff, has been appointed as the Sole Administrator of the state. Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Vice Admiral Ibas’ journey to national prominence began with a solid educational foundation. He attended Nko Primary School before advancing to the prestigious Hope Waddell Training Institute in Calabar. His aspirations for military service took him to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), where he was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1983, marking the start of an extraordinary military career.

His unwavering commitment to professional growth led him to undertake numerous specialized courses locally and internationally. These included:

  • Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course (India)
  • Primary Pilot Training (Kaduna, Nigeria)
  • Amphibious Warfare Training (United States Marine Corps University)
  • Master’s in Defence and Strategic Studies (Quaid-I-Azam University, Pakistan)

These diverse experiences shaped him into a well-rounded military strategist with an exceptional grasp of maritime security, governance, and defense policy.

Distinguished Military and Diplomatic Career

Vice Admiral Ibas has held key positions that underscored his leadership capabilities:

  • Commanding Officer, Nigerian Navy Underwater Warfare School
  • Director of Maritime Warfare, Armed Forces Command and Staff College
  • 20th Chief of the Naval Staff (2015–2021)

During his tenure as Chief of the Naval Staff, he spearheaded groundbreaking reforms, modernized naval operations, and reinforced Nigeria’s maritime security architecture. His contributions helped position the Nigerian Navy as a formidable force in combating piracy, illegal fishing, and other maritime threats.

Following his retirement from active service, he transitioned into diplomacy, serving as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana (2021–2023). His tenure in Ghana further solidified his credentials as a seasoned administrator and international relations expert.
