Tragedy Strikes: Gunmen Kill Port Harcourt-Based Architect, Asomba Andrew Egbuonu

The Nigerian architectural community has been shaken to its core by the senseless murder of Anambra-born architect, Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, just four days before his mother’s burial. This devastating incident has left family, friends, and colleagues reeling in shock and outrage.

Asomba Andrew Egbuonu, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (FNIA), was a highly respected figure in his field. Until his untimely death, he served as Chair of Architectural Exhibitions and Past Chair of the NIA Rivers State Chapter. His contributions to the architectural landscape of Nigeria were significant, and his legacy will be deeply missed.

According to a statement by Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, General Secretary of the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Egbuonu died on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from complications related to gunshot wounds sustained during an attack by unidentified gunmen near his hometown. The attack occurred while Egbuonu was finalizing arrangements for his mother’s burial, slated for Thursday, November 21.

Colleagues and acquaintances have expressed shock and outrage over Egbuonu’s senseless killing. HRH Brume Franklin Abuchi commented:

“How long will they continue to kill the people they claim to be fighting for? This is getting out of hand; their leader needs to apply wisdom.”

Jane Odukwe, a friend, mourned:

“Double sorrow for his family – mother and son. This is so sad. I used to see him every Sunday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Woji, Port Harcourt.”

The Nigerian Institute of Architects has called for justice and an immediate investigation into Egbuonu’s murder. The Institute’s General Secretary, Chike Chamberlain Ibeanu, stated:

“We condemn this heinous act and demand that the authorities take swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. We will not rest until justice is served.”

The Egbuonu family has been left to mourn the loss of a loved one, compounded by the grief of losing their matriarch just days earlier.
