Rivers Government Partners with Engineers to Tackle Building Collapses, Boost Housing Development

Map of Rivers State

The Rivers State Government has announced a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) to address the recurring issue of building collapses and improve infrastructure development across the state.

The Commissioner for Housing, Benibo Fredrick Anabraba, revealed this during a courtesy visit to the Rivers State chapter of the NSE in Port Harcourt on Monday. Accompanied by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Boma Wakama, Anabraba emphasized that the collaboration aims to enhance public infrastructure in rural areas and ensure safer building standards for the benefit of residents.

A New Era of Collaboration

Breaking from tradition, where professional bodies often seek government engagement, the visit marked a proactive step by the administration, signaling a commitment to openness and collaboration in line with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s governance mandate.

Anabraba highlighted plans to develop housing estates in the hinterlands and coastal regions of Rivers State through public-private partnerships. He stressed the importance of addressing engineering challenges, particularly in preventing building collapses, by setting and enforcing high structural integrity standards.

“This meeting represents not only a fresh dialogue but the laying of a solid foundation for enduring collaboration between the Ministry and our esteemed engineers,” Anabraba stated. “We are dedicated to working hand-in-hand with professionals to ensure that our housing initiatives are safe, sustainable, and inclusive.”

Focus on Streamlining Building Processes

The Chairman of the Rivers State chapter of the NSE, Engr. Idaeresoari Harriet Ateke, commended the government’s initiative and proposed establishing a One-Stop Center for building approvals. This center, she explained, would simplify the permit process, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, and encourage adherence to safety protocols.

The partnership aims to address key engineering and housing challenges in the state, setting the stage for enhanced infrastructure, safer buildings, and improved access to housing solutions for Rivers residents.
