Tinubu Vows To Heal Nigeria Wounds, Honors Ogoni Martyrs

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering dialogue, reconciliation, and healing among Nigeria’s ethnic groups, particularly in the South East region. This commitment is crucial, considering the region’s history of marginalization and the lingering tensions from the 2023 presidential election.

In a special message commemorating the 2024 Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, Tinubu honored the memories of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders who were executed on November 10, 1995. He acknowledged the struggles of the Ogoni people to protect their environment from harmful oil exploration and pledged to prevent similar injustices in the future. “As we remember the Ogoni Martyrs, let us honor their legacy by committing to a future where such injustices are no longer tolerated and where the voices of all Nigerians are heard and respected,” Tinubu stated.

Tinubu declared that he stood in solidarity with the National Youth Council of Ogoni People and all Ogoni citizens to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of the Ogoni nation’s interests. This year’s commemoration, themed “After Price, Comes Prize,” reflected “our collective commitment to acknowledging the pain and the lessons of the past as we aspire for a brighter future.” He emphasized that his administration would actively address historical grievances and work towards building a united and prosperous nation for future generations.

To achieve lasting peace and stability in the South East, Tinubu’s administration should focus on addressing historical grievances, inclusive governance, economic development, and security reform ¹. The president must learn from the mistakes of his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, whose policies were perceived as discriminatory and exacerbated tensions in the region.

Key Areas of Focus:
Addressing Historical Grievances: Tinubu must acknowledge the region’s historical grievances, including the marginalization of the Igbo people and the neglect of the region’s infrastructure.
Inclusive Governance: The president should ensure that his administration is inclusive and representative of all regions, ethnic groups, and interests.
Economic Development: Tinubu’s government should prioritize economic development in the South East, addressing issues such as unemployment, poverty, and infrastructure decay.
Security Reform: The administration should reform the security sector, addressing the militarization of the region and ensuring that security forces are accountable to the people.

By commemorating the Ogoni Martyrs Remembrance Day, Tinubu aims to promote peace, justice, and sustainable development, especially in the Niger Delta region. His commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and healing is a step in the right direction. However, it requires concrete actions to address the region’s deep-seated issues.
