Once upon a time, Drake and Kendrick Lamar were partners: Lamar served as an opening act for Drake’s Club Paradise Tour in 2012, and Drake featured on Lamar’s track “Poetic Justice” the same year. However, relations soured in 2013 when Lamar delivered a verse on Big Sean’s song “Control,” directly addressing Drake and other rappers by name and expressing a competitive edge: “I have respect for all of you, but I aim to surpass you / ensuring your loyal fans never forget you.”
While Drake didn’t officially retaliate — speculation arose regarding his 2013 track “The Language” as a response, but Birdman, the head of Drake’s then-record label, refuted this claim — their dynamic appeared stable, with Drake even praising Lamar at his OVO Festival the following year.
On March 22, the conflict reignited after Lamar featured on “Like That,” a diss track by Metro Boomin and Future, asserting his superiority over J. Cole and Drake. This sparked retaliatory responses from J. Cole, who initially released “7 Minute Drill” on Apr. 5 before retracting it, and Drake, who unveiled “Push Ups” on Apr. 19.
Lamar countered “Push Ups” on Apr. 30 with “Euphoria” and followed up with another diss track, “6:16 in LA,” on May 3. The exchange of diss tracks has continued with a plethora of details emerging.
