Commercial motorists back Rivers govt for disbanding tricycles

By Brave Dickson

Commercial motorists in Rivers State have backed moves by the Fubara-led state government to arrest tricycle operators plying major roads in the capital city of Port Harcourt.

The commercial motorists made this known following a renewed warning by the state government through its Ministry of Transport, insisting that tricycle operations remain disbanded within major roads of Port Harcourt.

In a chat with our correspondent, the Chairman of, the Urban Drivers Welfare Association, Lekia Isaac said the operation of tricycles in the city will end up defacing the city and causing more traffic.

“We have written a lot of letters to the Ministry of Transport to ensure that there is sanity on the roads of Port Harcourt.

“The activities of tricycles on major roads are defacing and causing traffic in the city because a lot of them rides recklessly.

“Their activities should be limited to certain roads alone and they should avoid the major roads of the city.

“So, we are in full support of the disbandment placed on tricycle operators by the state government but the government should try and specify their routes of operation in order for them not to fall victim.

“Disbanding them from the city of Port Harcourt remains a welcome development,” he said.
