Naira scarcity: Police nab 9 over burning of banks in Delta

The Delta State Police Command says it has arrested nine persons allegedly involved in the unrest that left some banks and vehicles charred in some parts of the state.

Some residents on Wednesday had staged a protest, opposing the non-availability of new naira notes in different parts of the state.

The demonstration witnessed in different areas including Warri, Asaba, and Express Junction in Udu LGA, had degenerated into chaos, as angry protesters chanted solidarity songs while marching through the streets.

Announcing the arrest of the suspects, the Spokesperson of the state command, DSP Bright Edafe said the arrest was made by operatives from the Ovwian/Aladja Division, assisted by other units, who raided the environs of affected financial institutions.

The crisis following the Central Bank of Nigeria’s redesign of the naira has attained alarming levels in Delta, Edo, Oyo, Ondo, Kwara, and Lagos States.
