No candidate missed exams in Enugu – WAEC

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has said that no candidate in Enugu state missed its ongoing examinations amidst the sit-at-home order of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB).

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Enugu, on Tuesday, the Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator of the council, Mrs. Eucharia Onodu disclosed that many students slept over in their schools, in order to meet up with the exams as scheduled.

According to her, the students put in extra effort, as some students, who come from home had to squat with those in the hostels to be able to write the examination.

She noted that although it might have been uncomfortable for them, protocols were, however, strictly observed to ensure hitch-free examinations.

“I am aware some made extra effort, while others went to a lot of stress to write this exam and on our own part, we did not compromise the protocols put in place.

“We still had the exams as scheduled on the timetable and I am happy that at the end they all made it.

“I do not think somebody missed the exam because of the sit-at-home order,” she said.

Speaking further, Onodu noted that a stakeholder meeting was held with the Ministry of Education on how to secure designated exam centers.

She stated that the commissioner of the Ministry also reached out to community leaders who assured the council of adequate safety through the use of local vigilantes as she noted that no community reported any form of attack.

The coordinator expressed optimism over candidates’ performance, as she said they are expected to perform better in this year’s exams.

“They had lessons and ought to have covered the syllabus more than last year,” she said.
