The UN General Assembly has designated every 30th of July as the World’s Day against Human Trafficking and declared that it was necessary to observe such a day to “raise awareness of the situation of victims of human trafficking and for the promotion and protection of their rights.”
A global crime to which no country is immune to, human trafficking is a crime that exploits women, children and men for several purposes including forced labour and sex.
According to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), since 2003, around 225,000 victims of human trafficking have been detected worldwide.
Human trafficking is a heinous crime happening all around us. The victims – 30% of which are children – are subjected to forced labour, sexual exploitation and other forms of abuse.
In an interview with TPCN, the International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Rivers state chapter has called on parents to be vigilant in the upbring of their children.
The state chairperson of FIDA, PASTOR NGOZI ODUKWE-IGHOSEVBE made this assertion during a sensitization work to mark the World Trafficking Day at Rumuokoro and Rukpokwu market in Obio/Akpor local government area.
She added that trafficking of children is a crime against government.
The Fida Chairperson called for collaborative effort from government, stakeholders, to enable the implementation of child rights law take effect.
