OML 25: 7000 Ogoni women to join protest against Shell in Kula

The Conscience of Ogoni People has threatened to mobilize 7000 Ogoni women to join the occupation of Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC’s OML 25 in Kula, Akuku-Toru Local Government of Rivers State.

The OML was in August 2017 shut down by women in the area following a disagreement with Shell.

Gani Togba, the leader of the group in a statement on Wednesday, also warned the Rivers State Government to desist from intervening in the matter, as the indigenes of the area have the right of first refusal.

He stressed that ownership of the oilfield is still a subject of dispute at the Supreme Court

According to him: “We looked at the issue of Ken Saro-Wiwa when he launched a peaceful protest against SPDC. He had told the tribunal that Shell would have issues with all the communities in Niger Delta if they continue with their attitude.

“We are mobilising 7,000 women of Ogoni to join the women of Kula to continue the occupation and protest at the OML25 platform. If Ken Saro-Wiwa was alive, he would have supported the Kula people.

“The Kula environment has been destroyed. Shell has destroyed that place. I am calling on all supporters of Ogoni people to come out. We are throwing our support behind the Kula people.

Everybody who believes in Ken Saro-Wiwa and Isaac Boro struggle will join in this struggle against injustice.”
