Rivers Community in distress as Shell lays gas pipes in residential area


Residents of Edegberi/Betterland community in Ahoada-West Local Government Area of have been left horrified as Shell Petroleum Development Commission has begun laying gas pipelines in residential areas of the community.

The gas pipelines are from the Adibawa Well to the Flowstation at Joinkrama 4.

A community source, Edwell told our correspondent that they are at risk of fire in case of any gas leak, adding that the pipes passed in front and direct backyards of peoples’ houses.

“As I am talking to you, the whole area is in a state of apprehension and turmoil. They (Shell) brought soldiers and hired labourers who started digging in residential areas saying that the houses were on the path of the pipelines.

“We are begging on the government to come to our aide or Shell should compensate us so that we will move from the area to other places. We can’t live with these potential threats to our lives” he said.

Theportcitynews sought the comments from over the development but the company has not responded as at the time of filing this report.
