Army captain injured during Rivers guber election undergoes second surgery

One of the officers of the Nigerian Army, who was attacked during the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections in Rivers State, Captain Adams Salami, has undergone two surgeries within two weeks at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt.

Salami and another soldier, Corporal Adeosun Adebayo, were attacked at their duty post at the Obio/Akpor local government collation centre, Rumuodomanya, Port Harcourt, by armed thugs allegedly in the convoy of Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

The chief medical director of UPTH, Prof. Henry Ugboma, spoke yesterday when the governorship candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Biokpomabo Awara, visited the wounded Captain at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the hospital.

Ugboma, who disclosed that the two surgeries were aimed at removing bullets lodged in his abdomen, said that his attackers did not want him to be alive considering of the manner he was shot.

He stated that doctors and nurses and other relevant staff of the hospital were working round the clock to ensure the speedy recovery of the officer.

Ugboma said: “Our staff: doctors, nurses and all the relevant staff have done their best to see that he gets the best attention we can afford. We believe that God has set him on the path of recovery and he will recover fully.

“Actually, the people that executed this wanted him dead. The shooting was at close range. We thank God that he is alive today. We thank you for coming; we appreciate your presence.”

On his mission, Awara, thanked the management and staff of the UPTH for all their efforts aimed at ensuring the officers the recovers.
